Savage Levers of North America
.
My first lever action that I remember was an old Stevens single shot 22, it had a falling block type action, as I remember it shot quite well. After that I started to fall away from the levers. I think I was about 17 when I got my next one, it was a Marlin 336 T in 44 magnum, I got it because I thought it would be a great companion for my Abilene in 44 Mag. Sold it sometime in the early 90’s, don’t remember why. I soon got married and hadn’t bought any guns for awhile. Then the wife was deployed due to train-up for Operation Iraqi Freedom, while she was gone I picked up a Model 99 in 300 Savage. That just totally ruined me, it is like a bug, once you have one, you just have to have another. Before I knew better, I had sent this rifle to the gunsmith and had it re-blued and had it drilled and tapped for a scope. I soon found myself a new home online in two different forums. One was the 24hourcampfire and the other was Savage Shooters for information on the model 99.
I found a very warm group of people that I am proud to call friends now. Some of them are pre-mil purists, some are 1899 guys, and others love all of the Model 1899/99 series. I find myself in the latter group. But my love is any of the models in 303 Savage. People out there like Jed1899, Lauren, Rick99, Lightfoot, MadDog and many others on these two sites have been a treasure trove of information. I call all of them friends and compatriots. Many of these gentlemen eat and breath Savage 99’s or just Savage collectables in general. If you need a question asked shoot to the Campfire and post a question, these guys can help.
If you are someone just getting into collecting or shooting the model 99, you need to pick up a excellent book by Doug Murray, “ The Savage 99”. If you are a collector you can get your rifles up to, I think 1953, lettered by the Savage Historian, both sites, campfire and Savage Shooters have links to show you how you can get these, I highly recommend them. You can find 1899/99’s in places like Gun Auctions on line, local auctions and pawn shops.
*PS if you have any hunting or Savage Rifle pictures that you would like to see please email them to me and I will post them.
